Board
Board Mandate
The purpose of the board, on behalf of the Chartwell congregations, is to provide essential governance in support of the church’s vision, mission and core values, and in fulfillment of its statement of faith. Board governance is best described as the gathering of two or more wise, capable leaders who have been entrusted with the role, authority and relationships to use their power to direct the affairs of the church.
The board establishes enduring policies, creating empowering boundaries for the operations of the church and congregations. These policies guide the Lead and Executive Pastors and staff and release them from continuously asking for permission or bringing frequent recommendations for approval. Policies address issues of authority, responsibility, accountability, relationships, and communications. Key policy areas include:
1. The church’s strategy and direction
2. The church’s operational boundaries
3. The board – senior staff relationships
4. The board’s functioning
The role of the board will be essentially four-fold:
1. To pray for the church, the staff, and the ministries.
2. To oversee or monitor the church’s spiritual condition, essential doctrines, ministry strategy and directions, pastoral leadership, and key administrative functions (e.g., stewardship and human resources).
3. To decide through the use of a policy governance approach.
4. To provide wise counsel.
